Maine's First Ship!
This organization is working to create a working (and sailing) model of the First Ship Built in the "New World" by the original colonists at Popham Beach, Maine.
Bath's connection to this community in Japan dates back to 1889 when the Bath-Built vessel the Chesebrough was wrecked off the shore of Shariki. The villagers braved the storm and rescued some of the crew. Those that perished were buried in the village and surrounding towns.
Every year since, the villagers have held a memorial service to remember ths souls of the sailor that died.
In 1989, Capt. Mike (then Bath City Council Chairman) was invited to participate in a memorial service in Shariki, Japan. Since then Bath and Shariki have held annual educational & cultural exchanges between our two communities. The Bath-Shariki relationship and story, was the catalyst for the subsequent establishment of the Maine - Aomori Sister-State relationship.
